Bolsena - Orvieto

The Excursion

Morning dedicated to visiting the lakeside village of Bolsena, where we will discover the evocative traditions linked to the patron saint Cristina (twelve-year-old daughter of the prefect Urbano, who governed the Roman municipality of Volsinii, Bolsena, under the empire of Diocletian). In the Cathedral dedicated to the Holy Martyr, the stone that, instead of causing her to drown, helped her to float and thus avoid her death, and on which the imprints of her feet remain, is still preserved.

Lunch in a restaurant.

In the afternoon, transfer to Orvieto, one of the oldest cities in Italy: it owes its origins to the Etruscan civilization, the first settlements dating back to the 9th century BC were located inside the tuff caves dug into the massif on which the Umbrian town currently stands. Strong in the consideration of the Papal State, Orvieto prospered throughout the Middle Ages, reaching the peak of its development in the 13th century with the establishment of the General Council of 400 and the election of the Captain of the People.

It was during this period that there was a fervent work of construction of palaces and sacred buildings, among which the very famous Cathedral stands out, dating back to 1263, undoubtedly the most important architectural testimony of the city, with its splendid Gothic façade and the richness of the decorations and internal chapels.
