The Tuscia
The Province of Viterbo
The Province of Viterbo, the northernmost of the provinces of Lazio, falls within the area called #Tuscia Laziale which extends north of Rome between the Tiber river and the Tyrrhenian Sea. It is bordered to the north by Tuscany (provinces of Grosseto and Siena), to which it is historically connected as the seat of some of the major centers of Etruscan civilization, to the south by the Sabatina region and the Tolfetano plateau, to the east by the Umbria and more precisely the province of Terni, to the west with the Tyrrhenian Sea.
The province of Viterbo develops mostly on an area built up by the explosive activity of three volcanic complexes: the Vulsino one (Lake Bolsena), the Vicano one (Lake Vico) and the Cimino one (Monti Cimini). All of these reliefs are part of the Tyrrhenian Anti-Apennines which, south of Rome, extends to the Alban hills and the Lepini, Ausoni and Aurunci mountains.

The water heritage of the Province of Viterbo
The water heritage of the province of Viterbo is decidedly substantial. There are numerous rivers, streams and lakes of volcanic nature. The main lake of Tuscia is Lake Bolsena, with an almost circular shape, it is the fifth largest lake in Italy and is considered the largest European lake of volcanic origin. Lake Vico, however, is the second lake in importance and size. This too has volcanic origins and is set in a beautiful Nature Reserve with centuries-old beech trees. Other smaller lakes are Lake Mezzano in the municipality of Valentano and the small lake of Monterosi, also of volcanic origin. As regards the river system, the Tiber should be remembered, the third longest river in Italy. Also important are the Marta, an emissary of Lake Bolsena and which flows near Tarquinia, the Paglia, the Fiora, the Arrone.
Tuscia has been chosen as a location for many films, some of which have made the history of both Italian and foreign cinema. Come and visit the breathtaking scenery that has served as the backdrop to films (just to name a few titles: Il Vigile with Alberto Sordi, I Vitelloni by Federico Fellini, Nothing remains but to cry with Massimo Troisi and Roberto Benigni, Three Men and a Leg with Aldo, Giovanni e Giacomo, The Stendhal Syndrome by Dario Argento, Othello by Orson Welles, Pinocchio by Luigi Comencini) and TV series, including the famous Maresciallo Rocca with Giggi Proietti, and more recently The Young Pope by Paolo Sorrentino, 2 seasons of I Borgia and more recently I Medici. Furthermore, for his first production George Clooney chose Viterbo as the location for the series Catch 22!!
